Before the Spotlight: The Fascinating Pre-Debut Journey of Song Kang

Long before he was earning the global title of Netflix’s “Son” and melting hearts in hit K-dramas like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was simply a young man trying to figure out his path.

While today he is celebrated for his striking visuals, effortless charm, and compelling acting range, his road to stardom wasn’t an overnight success story. In fact, his entry into the entertainment industry is a tale of quiet persistence, missed turns, and a fateful pivot that changed the course of his life.

The Reluctant Beginnings: Finding Direction

Born in April 1994, Song Kang didn’t grow up with an immediate, burning desire to become an actor. Like many young adults, he spent his late teens exploring different options and figuring out what truly sparked his interest. He famously admitted that for a long time, he didn’t know what he wanted to do with his future.

Before finding his calling in acting, he dabbled in various interests. He had a passion for fitness—a trait that would later serve him well in action-heavy roles—and spent a lot of time working out. However, a pivotal moment arrived when he watched Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. Struck by the powerful emotional depth and presence of DiCaprio on screen, a seed was planted: I want to evoke those kinds of emotions in people.

This inspiration led him to enroll at Konkuk University, majoring in Film Arts, where he finally began to immerse himself seriously in the craft of acting and filmmaking.

The Training Ground and Early Rejections

Entering the competitive world of South Korean entertainment is notoriously difficult, and Song Kang’s pre-debut days were filled with the usual grueling hurdles of auditions and rejections.

Signed under Namoo Actors—an agency renowned for managing top-tier acting talent—he spent his university years and early twenties as a dedicated trainee. Unlike many K-pop idols who train in singing and dancing for years before public exposure, Song Kang’s training was entirely focused on the nuances of acting, vocal control, and emotional expression.

Despite his natural good looks, he didn’t land roles immediately. He spent countless hours in audition rooms, facing quiet rejections that tested his resilience. Instead of getting discouraged, he used that period to build a solid foundation, studying classic films, observing human behavior, and refining his craft out of the public eye.

The Quiet Breakthrough: Stepping Onto the Screen

All that behind-the-scenes preparation finally paid off in 2017 when he made his official acting debut in the tvN romantic comedy series The Liar and His Lover.

Playing the sweet, guitar-playing second-lead character Baek Jin-woo, Song Kang charmed viewers with his innocent, boy-next-door energy. Though it was a minor role, it proved to be the spark that ignited his career. He followed it up with a supporting role in the weekend drama Man Who Sets the Table, steadily building his resume and gaining confidence in front of the camera.

From Pre-Debut Uncertainty to Global Stardom

Looking back at Song Kang’s pre-debut era, it’s easy to see how those years of quiet exploration shaped the actor he is today. The uncertainty he felt in his early twenties gave him a grounded, relatable vulnerability that often translates onto the screen, making his characters feel deeply human.
