The Voice of a New Generation: The Rise of Johannes Pietsch
In the ever-evolving landscape of modern music, few artists manage to bridge the gap between classical tradition and contemporary pop as seamlessly as Austrian singer-songwriter Johannes Pietsch, widely known by his stage name JJ. Bursting onto the international scene with a historic victory, Pietsch has captured the hearts of millions with his soaring vocals, multicultural background, and distinct pop-opera style.
Roots and Early Influences
Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, to an Austrian father and a Filipino mother, Pietsch’s upbringing was uniquely global. He spent the majority of his childhood living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It was there that his dual musical identity began to take shape.
Growing up, his household was filled with contrasting musical sounds: pop music introduced through lively family karaoke gatherings, and classical opera shared by his father. This unusual combination laid the groundwork for his future signature sound. In 2016, his family moved back to his birthplace of Vienna, where he immersed himself deeper into formal vocal training, eventually attending the opera school of the Vienna State Opera and later the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.
Paving the Way Through Television
Before achieving global recognition, Pietsch tested his mettle on competitive television stages. In 2020, after missing the application deadline for The Voice of Germany, he successfully auditioned for the ninth series of The Voice UK. Under the mentorship of will.i.am, he advanced all the way to the intense Knockout rounds.
The following year, he returned to his home country to compete in the fifth season of the revived music show Starmania, where he successfully reached the final stages. These early television appearances helped him build confidence, stage presence, and a loyal foundational fanbase.
Making History at Eurovision 2025
Pietsch’s career reached a monumental turning point in early 2025. On January 30, Austrian broadcaster ORF announced that he would represent Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 with the song “Wasted Love”, which he co-wrote alongside Teodora Špirić and Thomas Thurner.
When he took to the Eurovision stage, his powerhouse performance left audiences spellbound. On May 17, 2025, JJ was crowned the winner of the grand final, racking up an impressive 436 points (258 from the professional juries and 178 from the public televote).
The victory was historic for multiple reasons:
- He became the first solo Eurovision winner born in the 21st century.
- He made history as the first Eurovision champion of Southeast Asian descent.
Artistic Style and Legacy
As a sopranist (a specialized type of countertenor capable of hitting striking soprano heights), Pietsch uses his dramatic vocal range to merge the theatrical emotion of opera with catchy, driving pop beats. Multilingual in German, English, and Tagalog, he connects effortlessly with a diverse, international audience.
Beyond his vocal talents, Pietsch has used his platform to advocate for communities close to his heart, proudly identifying as queer and striving to be a positive voice for LGBTQ+ youth. With subsequent music releases, award-winning collaborations (such as his acclaimed work with Conchita Wurst), and major concert tours, Johannes Pietsch has firmly established that his extraordinary voice is here to stay.
