Beyond the Classroom: The Real Story of Dr. Vikas Divyakirti and His Civil Services Journey

When millions of aspirants across India search for guidance on YouTube, read editorials, or watch motivational clips about cracking the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams, one name consistently stands out: Dr. Vikas Divyakirti.

Often colloquially associated with the “IAS” tag in public imagination, people frequently wonder: Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?

The short answer is yes and no. While he did successfully clear the prestigious civil services examination and briefly worked within the government machinery, his legacy is defined not by holding an IAS office, but by choosing to walk away from it to build an educational empire.

The Early Academic Crusader

Born on December 26, 1973, in Bhiwani, Haryana, Vikas Divyakirti grew up in an environment deeply rooted in education and literature. His academic track record is remarkably extensive. He pursued multiple degrees through Delhi University—including a Bachelor’s in History, followed by a Master’s, M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Hindi Literature. His intellectual curiosity didn’t stop there; he also earned degrees and qualifications in English-to-Hindi translation, Sociology, Law (LLB), and mass communication.

Cracking the UPSC and the Bold Resignation

In 1996, at the young age of 23, Divyakirti achieved what millions consider the ultimate career pinnacle: he cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination on his first attempt, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.

He was allotted to the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, where he served as a section officer. However, his stint inside the government was short-lived. Driven by a profound passion for teaching and a desire to create a broader societal impact, he made the startling decision to resign from his government post just a few months later.

The Birth of Drishti IAS

Having stepped away from formal civil service, Divyakirti pivoted entirely toward mentorship and education. In November 1999, he laid the foundation of Drishti IAS in a modest setup in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, initially teaching a small handful of students.
